The village was formed in the late 1700’s around fresh water springs; by 1817 the town had a post office, a Masonic Lodge and a library. During the Civil War, North Carolina seceded from the Union and many men of the village left to join the Confederate army; many of these same men were killed at Gettysburg in a battle called Pickett’s Charge. With many of town’s men killed in the war the village was virtually deserted. The town remained around a population of 500 people until the 1960’s when the Triangle Research Park opened and attracted new residents; Holly Springs was the first town in North Carolina to have both a black mayor and a black police chief.
