The region’s growth germinated in 1965 when Walt Disney announced plans to build Walt Disney World; prior to this Orlando was a small, sleepy town with no real industry to speak of. In addition, the Orlando airport and Interstate 4 were opened in the late sixties which gave a huge boost to the area. Today, it is also a very popular golf destination with numerous first class courses in the immediate vicinity.
