There are THREE large items owned by many households that should be moved by a highly professional moving company the big three are pianos, pool tables and hot tubs. These three are very difficult to move if you are performing a self service move; in particular pianos require special handling to preserve your initial investment which can often be quite large.
To preserve the quality of a grand or baby grand piano before moving, it should be first inspected by a competent piano tuner. He or she will be able to recommend the best procedure for locking the keyboard in place; sometimes he will need to fashion a board or piece of wood to snugly fit inside the piano so that the keys stay in place during the move. Keep in mind a grand or baby grand piano will be turned on its side and placed on a piano board for moving; it is strapped to the board so that three or four men can safely handle this large, very heavy piece of furniture.
After delivery to your new home, it is best to wait for three or four weeks to call a piano tuner out to inspect and tune your piano. This time period allows the wood in the piano to expand or contract according to the new climate to which you moved so that when the piano is retuned it will not need another tuning for some time.
For those adventurous souls out there who may want to move a piano with the help of friends or family, careful planning is essential for your piano to arrive at its new location. If you are contemplating moving a grand piano yourself, just stop now, go no further! We strongly recommend that this is NOT attempted by amateurs. You have made a significant investment in a beautiful musical instrument; please protect your investment, hire a professional mover.
One very important tip when trying to move any size piano: you MUST not attempt to move any piano up or down four consecutive small steps. From experience we know that you will most assuredly drop the piano and will probably cause significant damage. What one must do is construct a ramp or use heavy duty plywood over the stairs to smooth the transition
