This area of Georgia was settled by Shawnee and Cherokee Indians when the land was ceded to the US Government in 1817 by the Indians; the name Suwanee has its origins in the Native American language as the area had been settled by various Indian tribes for hundreds of year, some historians say that it is the Indian word for “echo” while others say the name comes from the way the white settlers pronounced the Indian word Shawnee. Suwanee was officially recognized as a town when the US Postal Service opened there in 1838.
From 1979 until 2001, Suwanee was the training and practice home to the Atlanta Falcons professional football team. The team began playing in the 1966 losing their first game to the Eagles; perennially a losing team, they achieved some measure of success by reaching the 33rd Super Bowl played in Miami, Florida and home to the great all time winning coach, Don Shula. In 2001, the Falcons drafted Michael Vick as quarterback, the hugely talented and mercurial player from Virginia Tech. With his unique scrambling ability, he led the team to the NFC Championship game twice yet both times losing to the ubiquitous Philadelphia eagles. In 2007, the NFL suspended Vick indefinitely because of his conviction in Federal Court for dog fighting; Vick was given a two year sentence in jail as well as losing untold millions of dollars in salary, incentives and endorsement revenue.
