Suwanee was officially recognized as a town when the US Postal Service opened there in 1838.

From 1979 until 2001, Suwanee was the training and practice home to the Atlanta Falcons professional football team. In 2001, the Falcons drafted Michael Vick as quarterback, the hugely talented and mercurial player from Virginia Tech. In 2007, the NFL suspended Vick indefinitely because of his conviction in Federal Court for dog fighting; Vick was given a two year sentence in jail as well as losing untold millions of dollars in salary, incentives and endorsement revenue.
