Missouri, the “Show-Me” state, is so named because its people often exhibit a doubtful or skeptical attitude toward anyone or anything claiming to state a truth or true fact in their presence. The major shocks and after shocks lasted for several months; it was said that the largest quake was felt as far away as New Orleans and Chicago. Many geologists and scientists fear that another quake of that magnitude which many believe is a distinct possibility would have a devastating effect on such cities as Memphis or St. Louis.
