Rhode Island is a small New England state located between Connecticut and the Atlantic Ocean and despite its name only a portion of the state is a true island, most of the state lies on the American mainland. The Italian explorer, Giovanni da Verrannzo, first landed on what is now Rhode Island in 1524 and named the land “Luisa” after Louise Savoy, Queen Mother of France because he described her as being about the size of the island of Rhodes. Later during British rule, the people of Rhodes Island demonstrated staunch independence as they were the first colony to declare independence from Britain and were the last state to join the Federal Union.
This tradition of independence and tolerance for all people was pioneered by Roger Williams who founded the very First Baptist Church of America in 1638; in Newport the very first synagogue was founded in 1763, the Touro Synagogue, and it is still serving today. Newport was also the location for the debut of a young Jewish musician from the suburbs of Minneapolis, Robert Zimmerman. At the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 Bob Dylan stood the music world on its ear with his gritty singing and song writing that changed an entire generation.
Known as the Ocean State, the residents of Rhode Island enjoy a rich tradition of sailing, fishing and boating. It is famous for the “stuffie”, large clam filled with stuffing and spicy sausage then baked to a firm crispness. Newport is also famous for its enthusiastic sailing community; one of the largest sailboat shows on the East Coast is held there each spring.
