The Commonwealth of Virginia is the 12th most populated state and is located on the Atlantic Ocean just north of North Carolina; it is named after Queen Elizabeth I of England who was known as the Virgin Queen because she never married. The Virginia Company of London founded the colony in 1607 as the first New World permanent English colony with the hemisphere’s oldest legislative body.
Virginia was one of the first states to plant vines for growing grapes used in the production of wine; in the early 1600’s seedlings were imported from France and planted with much success. In 1770, Thomas Jefferson imported the grape vine Vitis Vinifera for planting at his Virginia estate Monticello. By the way, at this time in history the playing of billiards[page 49] was illegal in the state so Jefferson hid his pool table in the dome of his mansion at Monticello. Today, Virginia is an important producer of wine, second only to New York in gallons produced each year.
Virginia is the most populated state that does not have a professional sports team belonging to one of the four major sports. It is a hub, however, for NASCAR activity as several drivers were born and live in the state. Perhaps the most famous are brothers Jeff and Ward Burton; although no longer active in NASCAR, Ward appears to be the only celebrity known to be able to speak without moving his lips.
