Rhode Island is a small New England state located between Connecticut and the Atlantic Ocean and despite its name only a portion of the state is a true island, most of the state lies on the American mainland. The Italian explorer, Giovanni da Verrannzo, first landed on what is now Rhode Island in 1524 and named the land “Luisa” after Louise Savoy, Queen Mother of France because he described her as being about the size of the island of Rhodes.
