Illinois is the fifth most populous state with a diverse economy; the largest city, Chicago, is a center for transportation, the cattle industry and commodities trading. When John Deere invented the steel plow in the early 1900’s, it brought waves of immigrants from Europe to farm the fertile prairie land south of Chicago. As a railroad and barge transportation hub in the early twentieth century, cattle were shipped to Chicago to be slaughtered in the meat packing houses.
