West Virginia is a state located in the Appalachia/Upland South area of the United States; it seceded from the state of Virginia during the Civil War on June 23, 1863. This date is still celebrated as West Virginia Day to show pride in their differences from the state of Virginia. During the Civil War, West Virginia furnished about the same number of troops, between 20,000 to 22,000, to both the Federal and Confederate governments.
Today West Virginia has a very fragile economy with coal mining as its only major industry. Most of the young people after graduating high school or college leave the state to find careers elsewhere. Tourism remains the only other major economic draw as the state is known for its fishing, hunting, white water rafting, canoeing and hiking; any outdoors person will make it a point if possible to visit West Virginia to enjoy its numerous outdoor adventure activities.
Greenbrier was the birthplace and early home to one of professional golf greatest players: Sam Snead. He was known for his extremely smooth swing which generated great power and speed; his swing did not seem as forced or hurried as many of the modern golfers including Tiger Woods. Greenbrier is also home to the world famous Greenbrier Resort which has over 8,000 rooms, tennis courts and three golf courses. The resort is unique in that during the late 1950’s an immense underground bunker was built under the West Wing; this was to be used by the President and Congress as a place to escape to in case of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. It was a doomsday bunker which actually resembled the bunker seen in the highly regarded film Dr. Strangelove starring the great Peter Sellers in which he played three different roles.
